Ongoing Product Design for an AI Math Learning Platform Used Across Lithuania

Elicejus is an AI-powered math learning platform for students in grades five through twelve. It identifies each student’s specific knowledge gaps and provides targeted practice to close them — adapting as the student progresses. Used by tens of thousands of students and hundreds of teachers across Lithuania, it’s one of the most widely-used ed-tech products in the country.

We work with the Elicejus team as an ongoing design partner across the full product.

Ongoing Product Design for an AI Math Learning Platform Used Across Lithuania

No defined scope, no end date

This isn’t a project with a start and finish — it’s a continuous design partnership. Work comes in as a live backlog: new features, flows that need rethinking, UX problems that surfaced from real users. For each item, we identify the root problem, map the affected flow, design the solution, and hand it off.

Some things are fast — a confusing error message, a mobile layout that broke without anyone noticing. Others require proper design sprints — the kind of structural work that affects how the whole system holds together. The discipline this requires: without a fixed scope, you have to be deliberate about which problems are worth solving and which are surface fixes.

The KTU motivational research experiment

One of the most unusual things we’ve designed in this engagement.

Kaunas University of Technology partnered with Elicejus to run a controlled scientific experiment on whether different types of feedback after a test affect student motivation and performance. We designed three distinct result screen variants — each fully native to the Elicejus product, but clearly differentiated in how they communicated results:

  • Control group — neutral result display: scores, correct/incorrect breakdown, no motivational framing
  • Mastery group — skill-based framing emphasising what the student has mastered and what gaps remain
  • Performance group — competitive framing showing the student’s percentile relative to peers

Each variant was a complete result screen with its own score summary, skill breakdown, motivational copy, and practice recommendation links. The variants had to feel completely authentic to Elicejus — not like test conditions — while being clearly differentiated enough for researchers to isolate the effect of framing. The experiment ran successfully using our designs.

Student experience

Test assignment badge system

We designed a badge lifecycle system for how test assignments appear in the student’s view. A test can be in several states — assigned, started, in progress, overdue, completed, flagged for review — and each state needed to communicate urgency and status at a glance without requiring the student to read carefully. We defined the visual logic for each state and the transition rules between them, including edge cases: a test assigned but not yet due, started but not submitted before the deadline, or flagged by a teacher after submission.

Gap indicators in the learning path

Elicejus identifies knowledge gaps through test performance. We designed gap indicators that appear directly in the learning path, linking a student’s specific identified weaknesses to the exact lessons that address them. This closes the loop between “you struggled with these questions” and “here’s what to study” — rather than leaving students to navigate to remediation content on their own.

Share-via-URL test flow

Teachers needed a way to share specific tests via a direct link — for homework sent through other channels, or for sharing practice tests with students outside Elicejus. We designed the share and access flow, including the experience for students arriving via link who don’t yet have an account: how they authenticate, how the test is presented, and how results connect back to the teacher.

Content search and test-taking improvements

Students needed to search within the course content library rather than navigate it hierarchically. We designed the search experience including result ranking and empty states. The core test-taking experience also received UX improvements: clearer question navigation, better time-remaining display, improved save-and-return functionality, and fixes to mobile layouts that had broken on certain screen sizes.

Teacher environment

Test assignment and gap-detection configuration

Teachers assign tests from the available assessment library. We redesigned the assignment flow and added the option to designate a test as a gap-detection assessment — a specific type where the primary purpose is mapping what a student doesn’t know rather than grading them. This changes how results are surfaced to the teacher and what follow-up content is recommended to the student.

Group management and class progress tracking

Teachers manage groups spanning multiple classes or year levels. We redesigned group management to clarify which students belong to which groups and how to move students between them. The class progress view was redesigned to give teachers a cleaner overview — completed assignments, struggling students, recent login activity — with a restructured data table and simplified sidebar reducing visual noise.

Accessibility standards

We established and applied minimum font size and contrast standards across the teacher environment, resolving a scattered set of compounding accessibility issues that had built up over time.

Protau — the school reporting module

Protau is a separate in-platform reporting module for teachers and school administrators tracking learning outcomes at class and school level:

  • Session completion reports — which students completed which assignments, filterable by class and time period
  • Performance data — aggregate scores and pass rates per course and question set, used to identify which content is working and which needs revision
  • School-level admin views — for administrators managing multiple classes and teachers

We also redesigned the Protau landing page, moving the Elicejus login directly into the hero section so users arriving from an email link or school portal could sign in without an extra navigation step.

Design system evolution

Over the course of the engagement:

  • Primary colour change — moved away from purple to a new primary better suited to the student audience
  • Typography standards — defined type scales and usage rules across both student and teacher environments
  • Icon library consolidation — merged several competing icon sets into one consistent library
  • Illustration direction — defined the visual style for instructional illustrations and empty states

Still growing

The platform has been internationally recognised and is expanding beyond Lithuania. Continuous design partnership means problems get addressed as they appear — rather than accumulating until they require a full redesign to fix.

Reviews

Deep in the trenches with our partners.

★★★★★

I had the pleasure of working with Gytis for a long time, and he has consistently been one of the most thoughtful and dependable product designers I’ve worked with.

Gytis thinks deeply about the product, the user, and the business context behind every design decision. He is very strong at turning ambiguous ideas into clear, polished, usable experiences, and he brings a high level of taste and discipline to the work.

Gytis is someone I could trust with important product problems. He communicates clearly, takes feedback well, and has a calm, mature way of moving projects forward even when the direction is still evolving. That combination of creativity, judgment, and ownership made him a real partner to the product team!
